American Open Sword System - Ages 16 and up
The American Open Sword System was created by Grand Master Don Rodrigues and Master Alan D'Allessandro to present a curriculum based system of the sword. Unlike many sword programs, the AOSS has curriculum from White Belt to Black Belt to learn all aspects of the sword in a belt ranking system. In creating a belt ranking system with the sword, the AOSS creates a ceries of short term goals leading to the long term goal of being a proficient swordsman / Black Belt in the American Sword System.

Getting Started - Begining training at any martial arts facility should always begin with a school visit.  Please stop by any Wednesday to watch the sword class --  no appointment is necessary. This gives you the opportunity to see the facilities, meets the staff, and watch a class in action. After that, we invited you to join in.  A wooden practice sword will be provided for your use during this trial period.
Class Times:

AOSS classes are 60 minutes long and meet once per week on Wednesday evenings at 7:30 pm.

We also offer a mixed weapons class on Saturday mornings at 10:45 am.  AOSS can be studied at that time as well, although that class is both youth and adult.

Class days and times are subject to change. Please contact us to verify days, times, and space availability.

The American Open Sword System is a step by step curriculum that introduces the student to the Japanese long sword - the Katana. As a student you will learn traditional styles of drawing and returning the weapon, strikes, blocks and guards. The system features over 60 offensive and defensive maneuvers that, when mastered, provide a solid basis for wielding the Japanese sword.

Training consists of exercises and drills designed to teach proper grip and hand/arm/shoulder positions, proper footwork and stance. Training includes conditioning drills that develop mobility, agility, balance, accuracy, timing, speed and stamina. We work interactive partner drills using wooden practice swords (called bokens) as well as solo practice using (unsharpened) training blades.

American Open Sword System is open to students ages 16 and over. No previous martial arts experience is necessary. A free, karate style, uniform and belt will be provided. Students will need to purchase a bokken and metal training sword through Newport Martial Arts. No live (sharpened) blades are allowed (and are not recommended even for home use, until a high level of proficiency is attained)

"I am so happy with American Open Sword System. I received my Black belt in Okinawan Kempo Karate years ago and when in the class couldn’t wait to move on so we could learn different weapons. It is great that in AOSS the whole class is dedicated to the Katana. It is a well thought out system with new and old techniques. Great class for any age, teaches balance and the cardio work was a blast. (where else do you get to fight with bokkens (wooden swords)? The instructors are very dedicated and knowledgeable "
