About Newport Martial Arts
Our History on the Island
Newport Martial Arts is a family owned and operated martial arts school offering instruction for students ages 3 and up, white belt through advanced black belts. We hope you find all the information you seek on our website, but if not, please feel free to contact us. Our martial arts family has been teaching karate on Aquidneck Island since 1995. The first school, located at the Connell Highway rotary, was owned and operated by Shihan Don Rodrigues under the name Don Rodriques Karate Academy. In 1997, the business was purchased by Mr. Alan Toti, one of Shihan Rodrigues' black belts who moved the school to it's current location at the rear of the building at 800 Aquidneck Avenue. At that time, the name was changed to Newport Martial Arts. In June of 2005, the school was purchased by its current owners, Mr. Steve Burrill and Ms. Linda Haverty, two of Mr. Toti's black belts. In the summer of 2008, the current owners expanded the facility to add a second training area on the first floor space facing Aquidneck Ave.

Newport Martial Arts currently consists of two spaces at 800 Aquidneck Avenue in Middletown, RI. The "upstairs" space, with frontage on the street, has 600 sq. ft. of mat, a viewing area, and one bathroom. The "downstairs" space houses the Proshop; the office; 900 sq. ft. of mat; a viewing area; two large bathrooms; and a private lesson (or individual practice) room. At NMA, we pride ourselves on being "mother clean" -- you will never hesitate to let your children be barefoot on our mats or in the bathrooms. Click here to view our facilities. Newport Martial Arts currently has nine, regular Black Belt instructors, plus additional black belts which substitute or assist. All of our classes are taught by adults. Our instructors are required to continue receiving instruction in their respective arts; they also receive additional instruction in the art of teaching. [My son] absolutely loves NMA and often says that he wishes he could "live there".
