Karate Kids - Ages 4 to 6
At Newport Martial Arts, the style we teach children is Oki-Ryu Kenpo Karate. Students are grouped by age level because, although the curriculum is the same across all age groups, what the children are developmentally prepared to absorb is different at each age.
At this age, our emphasis is on:
  • Improving Focus and Concentration
  • Working in a group and taking turns
  • Waiting patiently, sitting still, raising their hands
  • Respect, Saying "Yes, Sir" and "No, Sir"
  • Listening and following direction
  • Developing Balance, Coordination, and Body awareness
  • Stranger Danger

Instructors:
  • Ms. Linda Haverty
  • Mr. Steve Burrill
  • Mr. Geary Hall

Getting Started - We always recommend your first step be a visit to the facility. Please bring your child and try to visit during a time period when the appropriate age class is in action. No appointment is necessary. This gives you and your child an opportunity to see the facilities, meet the staff, and watch a class in action. After that, children of this age begin by joining us on the mats for two introductory lessons. At the end of the two classes, if the child is fully participating, i.e. doing everything we ask of them, they will be awarded their white belt. If your child is insecure about participating, a parent is always welcome to join us on the mats.
Class Times:

Karate Kid classes are 45 minutes long and meet twice per week

Mon - Wed     4:00 pm                          Tues - Thur     4:00 pm
Mon - Wed     5:00 pm                          Tues - Thur     5:00 pm

Class days and times are subject to change.  Please contact us to verify days, times, and space availability.

"Thank you so much for the encouragement you always give to [our daughter], and for providing such a great class for her to learn karate. I have bragged on your school many times - creeds 2 &3 especially express exactly what I was looking for when finding a karate class - respect and determination. You have a talent for knowing just how and when to push the kids, and still enjoy them, and have them enjoy the class. I knew [my daughter] would be slower to allow herself freedom in "having fun" - because she's such an observer... she'll watch and watch (learning, too of course) before "letting loose". It's fun for me to see her evolve in any activity, and watch her gain confidence, and then have even more fun! I do NOT relish having to find a replacement school when we move!"
